PROJECT DETAILS
- FUNDING: $11,340 from the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund
- PLACEMENT: Roof-mounted 22.88 kW solar array
- ENERGY SAVINGS: Expected to generate 28,213 kWh in the first year
- IMPACT: $147,570 lifetime cost savings. Every dollar saved will be redirected back into affordable housing and community development.
The Housing Development Alliance (HDA) in Hazard, Kentucky, has just made a big leap toward sustainability with a new rooftop solar array, powered by a little sunshine and a lot of heart! This 22.88kW solar project was made possible by a $11,340 grant from the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund (SFF). This project is projected to generate 28,213 kWh of clean energy in its first year alone and will save HDA almost $150,000 in energy costs over the system’s lifetime. With a total upfront project cost of $56,700, the new array will not only reduce HDA’s energy expenses but also make a lasting impact on the community.
Lighting Up Hazard with Clean Energy
Thanks to the SFF’s contribution, the HDA can keep its focus where it matters most—on vital community programs. The anticipated energy savings are a game-changer for HDA, as every dollar saved will be redirected back into affordable housing and community development.
Shining a Light for Others to Follow
This solar installation, constructed by HOMES, Inc., will be one of the first of its kind in Hazard and only the second solar-powered small business in the area. By putting solar to work on its headquarters, HDA is paving the way for other local organizations to see renewable energy as an achievable goal. It’s a powerful message: Clean energy can economically and environmentally benefit Appalachia.
Solar-Powered Savings
HDA’s project also benefited from a range of financial incentives, including direct pay of the 30% federal Investment Tax Credit and a contribution of $14,742 from Mountain Association’s GM Fund. With the project’s completion, the HDA team is eager to see the savings put to good use. McReynolds adds, “This project doesn’t just cut costs—it creates opportunities. Mountain Association and the SFF have been incredible partners, helping us turn this vision into a reality.”
Energizing the Future of Hazard
In 2022, Eastern Kentucky faced an unprecedented disaster as flash floods turned quiet mountain “hollers” into raging rivers, sweeping away homes, claiming lives, and leaving communities in turmoil. Three of the four counties served by HDA—Breathitt, Knott, and Perry—were among the hardest hit. The devastation was staggering, but the community came together, rallying to support neighbors in need and beginning the long road to recovery.
While recent flood recovery efforts presented hurdles, HDA’s leadership remains strong in its commitment to renewable energy, seeing it as a bright path forward. With ongoing support from the SFF and Mountain Association, HDA is excited to see where solar energy can take them and how it can continue to energize Hazard’s future.
This project is more than just solar panels on a roof; it’s a beacon of progress for Hazard and an inspiration for the entire Appalachian region. As solar rays hit those panels, a sustainable future comes into clearer view, one watt at a time.
The Appalachian Solar Finance Fund is a regional financial and technical assistance program dedicated to spurring new solar development in coal-impacted communities throughout Central Appalachia.
