Collaboration in Action: Solar Finance Fund and the Central Appalachian Network Shine Together

Get To Know CAN

Since 1992, the Central Appalachian Network (CAN) has worked to create a more just and sustainable economy for all in our region. As a network of nonprofit organizations, this multistate collaboration allows for a regional view of the current needs and future trajectories of the Central Appalachian economy, enabling strategic focus on large-scale goals that make both deep local and broad regional impacts.

At the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund (SFF), collaboration is more than a guiding principle—it’s the backbone of our mission. Since our inception in 2021, we’ve been privileged to work alongside innovative, mission-driven organizations transforming the Central Appalachian region. Among our most cherished collaborators is the Central Appalachian Network (CAN), a longstanding advocate for a just and sustainable economy in the region.

A Shared Vision for an Innovative Future

Founded in 1992, CAN is a multistate network of practitioners dedicated to building a resilient economy that prioritizes long-term economic growth for hard-working communities throughout Central Appalachia. This reach provides CAN with a bird’s-eye view of the region’s needs and opportunities. By working across state lines, CAN achieves deep local impacts and drives systemic change across the region.

SFF has been fortunate to partner with CAN since our early days, benefiting from its leadership and expertise, particularly through its Clean Energy Working Group. This partnership exemplifies CAN’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions that work for communities.

Why the Partnership Works

For CAN, SFF is more than a resource—it’s a model for success. Through the Clean Energy Working Group, SFF has supported CAN in developing and implementing solar projects that bring tangible benefits to communities. As Emily Carlson from CAN notes, “SFF is one of CAN’s cherished examples of the power of collaboration. We enjoy lifting up SFF as a partner in the work.”

SFF’s accomplishments also serve as a valuable illustration for CAN’s broader network. By highlighting the impact of solar projects, CAN demonstrates the power of partnerships and collective action to its supporters.

We’re proud to work alongside partners like CAN, who help us take our region to new heights. Together, we’re lighting the way for a brighter future in Appalachia.

Highlighting a Shared Success: The WV Botanic Garden

Among the many achievements born from this partnership, the solar installation at the West Virginia Botanic Garden stands out as a shining example of what’s possible when organizations align their efforts. The project not only underscores the feasibility of renewable energy in community spaces but also inspires other organizations to consider similar endeavors.

Emily Carlson reflects, “There are so many projects to be proud of, but I was personally really thrilled to see the solar installation go up at the WV Botanic Garden with SFF!”

Building the Future Together

As we continue our journey with CAN, we remain inspired by their unwavering commitment to creating long-term economic success for the region. Together, we’re proving that collaboration isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the foundation for real, measurable change in Central Appalachia.
